Cultural life
Cultural life isn`t restricted to confined spaces in official institutions. There is also a thriving street culture. The Market Square and neighbouring streets form one more stage in this city. Although very attached to tradition and conservative in many cases, Krakow often bears witness to great events. The date June 1992 was undoubtedly an unforgettable month for the city, when Krakow played host to the European Culture month. The number of concerts, exhibitions and theatrical performances was really imposing. Krakow has its own underground system, a vast network of historical cellars which form a maze of night life. Many of them house theatrical and cabaret companies, for example, the famous "Piwnica pod Baranami" Cellar with Piotr Skrzynecki, the legendary Krakow bard. It`s here where freedom of speech became a reality during the post-war communist rule, a presence that was never accepted by the city. Earlier during the rule of His Majesty Franz Josef, Emperor of Austria, quite similar things happened at the "Zielony Balonik" (green balloon) cabaret which inspired future generations. Ewa Demarczyk, the "black angel of Polish song" started her career in the "Piwnica pod Baranami" Cellar. The artists from the cellar often interfered in ordinary daily life by staging unusual historical events on Krakow`s largest stage the Market Square. They performed scenes from the Prussian Homage, which recalled Poland`s glamorous past. During these performances former rulers of Poland appeared in splendid Renaissance costumes.
